Ever wondered what makes a photo really stand out? What separates okay photos from amazing ones? The types of camera and how to frame a photo often get talked about, but what about the editing? In this blog post, I wanted to give you a little insight into how important editing can be to a photograph, and the difference professional editing makes, especially in real estate photography. Different styles of photography require different amounts and types of editing, but here’s how much of an impact it makes on our photos:

Photo 1 is what we call an ambient photo. This is taken with a professional-grade camera and tripod, is carefully composed, and lit only by natural sunlight and the home’s lights. This is more or less what a person with no experience in editing but a little in photography can take. The windows are blown out with light, there is little definition in the objects, the image looks flat, certain objects are underlit, and there are unpleasing colors.

Photo 2 is a finished photo of ours that is the result of blending 3 images together: one “ambient” shot and two “flash” shots, which are lit almost entirely by our handheld flashes. Using these three images, we take the best parts of their lighting and coloration and edit them in both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to create the final product. In Photo 2, the windows have a much more natural look, the whole room is properly lit, the colors are pleasing, and there is good contrast and definition. All in all, photo 2 is much more pleasing to look at and makes the home more appealing.
